My Grandpapa lives in a wonderful house

There are stairs that go up, and stairs that go down,

But of all of the rooms, even mother's and mine,

Because of its ceiling and wall., h/ ?0 P8 C* k7 K& N, Y2 [8 e
Right over your head is a funny round hole: f2 j% y( u: [; {
With apples and pears falling through;
. J' f7 z2 y8 v' } There's a big bunch of grapes all purply and sweet,
+ |1 m# C+ o7 _& J( T And melons and pineapples too.6 O! W7 K+ F: ?) r
They tumble and tumble, but never come down
. }. A3 I! y9 I1 B/ k- d! U Though I've stood underneath a long while
* ?1 F# S6 a5 X9 a7 s0 X- o With my mouth open wide, for I always have hoped
! c& T3 ~, E) ^/ ] Just a cherry would drop from the pile.
3 t1 A4 j7 {- P No matter how early I run there to look, l% h9 |( E2 H: K+ C7 E
It has always begun to fall through;1 Q( X) d' E+ u! C4 p1 I) Q
And one night when at bedtime I crept in to see,
7 D5 c, A6 T5 l: P It was falling by candle-light too.3 q; ?3 D4 u* f1 i$ O
I am sure they are magical fruits, and each one
; `7 x0 l g& G' r Makes you hear things, or see things, or go
1 O# R9 O4 o/ o* p/ I! d Forever invisible; but it's no use,- m! N" j$ x# P/ d
And of course I shall just never know.) h& m% n8 i) D! ?2 u4 U4 w
For the ladder's too heavy to lift, and the chairs. Y5 t3 ^# t# H+ @. o
Are not nearly so tall as I need.
) q2 A( D. x7 \6 l5 ^ I've given up hope, and I feel I shall die
# _. i$ n% N( w) d" b Without having accomplished the deed.
3 ?' |. r2 f- U; X5 T5 ^- S It's a little bit sad, when you seem very near
' R8 M- [' u6 D7 V$ v, a To adventures and things of that sort,
6 p3 M5 T6 X @$ }2 ^2 b# G Which nearly begin, and then don't; and you know
/ m4 U, N. N5 y6 j2 c' N6 |' h9 o It is only because you are short.; n& n. d* W8 [' y
